Aberdeen | Afternoon Tea at Almondine

Once Christmas is over, and the fireworks signal the start of the New Year, it can be too easy to start feeling the dreaded January blues. I'll admit they've been creeping up on me this last week or so (mainly after checking my bank balance) but luckily I had something to look forward to. I'd booked the table and paid the deposit, and we finally kicked off our Alphabet Dating challenge with the best afternoon tea in Aberdeen at beautiful Almondine!

Sipping pink champagne in Almondine

Established in 2013, Aberdeen's only French patisserie pride themselves on their unique macaron recipe and traditional desserts, lovingly hand crafted by their own in house pastry chefs. Rows of pretty pastel macarons and a warm welcome greet you at the door as you enter the Thistle Street café.

A glass of pink fizz

Parisian décor and hints of duck egg blue, with a striking flower wall, create that soft and dreamy, relaxing ambience. A cold, crisp glass of pink fizz was just what the doctor ordered. Taking the role of designated driver, Gordon enjoyed Almondine's signature hot chocolate instead. I'm not a fan of instant hot chocolate but this was the real deal - rich, thick, deliciously smooth and perfectly sweet.

Ham, roast beef, cucumber, and egg and cress sandwiches

Naturally we tucked into the sandwiches first, working our way from the bottom up. A classic selection of beef, ham and mustard, cucumber and egg and cress, each of them perfectly made. I would have liked to see something a little different on this tier - maybe a mini version of the filled croissants and savoury crepes from their lunch menu?

The scones round up the first layer, smothered in cream and topped with raspberry jam, before we move onto the piece de resistance - the handmade patisserie! Where do I even begin? You may think afternoon tea is typically for women, but Gordon enjoyed it just as much as me!

Blackcurrent Charlotte cake

The charlotte - with it's purple polka dot almond sponge and blackcurrant mousse filling - was my favourite by a mile, closely followed by the chocolate opera cake. Of course it wouldn't be Almondine without a taste of their exceptional macarons! The handmade selection changes daily so you are likely to be offered a different choice at each visit.

I really enjoyed our treat at Almondine and highly recommend it if you're looking to celebrate a special occasion with afternoon tea in Aberdeen. You can pop in just for a coffee and cake or lunch as well and they'll always do their best to accommodate you.
