P is for Peterhead Prison Museum
Paddleboarding - Paintball - Picnic - Portsoy

After a little unplanned break, we are back on our A-Z dates and hoping to complete the alphabet by the end of the year! We'll have to stick to some fairly cheap activities as these adventures and days out do add up. Luckily for our next letter - P - we were able to stay local in Peterhead and visit the infamous Prison Museum.

Reasonably priced at £9 per adult, the tour is self guided with an audio headset and lasts about an hour and a half.

It's a fascinating tour showing how cells would have looked way back in the 1880's when the prison first opened, and follows the stories of both prison officers and inmates over the years.

From the story of escapist "Gentle" Johnny Ramensky to the 1987 riot, which resulted in the SAS storming the prison, it's safe to say Peterhead Prison has had a colourful history. Former staff share their accounts on the audio guide, and if you're lucky you might even get the chance to meet Jackie Stewart - the officer held hostage on the roof for 4 days!

We really enjoyed the tour - it's a brilliant insight into life at the prison and our local history. I still find it hard to believe it's only 5 years since the old Victorian building was in use as the notorious HMP Peterhead!

The museum also houses a café overlooking the Harbour of Safe Refuge breakwater, which was actually built by convicts back in the early days of the prison.

Jammy D's ice cream Peterhead

With the weather taking an unusual turn for the better, we headed into town instead to grab an ice cream from Jammy D's. A mix of Superman and Squashie ice-cream for him, and a simple condensed milk flavour with raspberry sauce for me, we enjoyed them down at the Lido overlooking the bay.

After a quick stop back at the house for dinner and homemade margaritas, we finished off our date with a visit to our favourite local brewers. Well, P is also for Pub quiz! Brew Toon host the toughest quiz in town every Sunday evening. Entry is free, it's always a good laugh and you have the chance to win a whole crate of Brew Toon beer!

(We've never won yet...)

Brew Toon Peterhead

Peterhead Prison Museum is definitely worth a visit if you're in North East Scotland. Look out for their special events too - the Hallowe'en tours are bound to be a scream! Why not make a day of it and enjoy a brewery tour or beer flight at Brew Toon while you're in town?
