Edinburgh | Dinner at Toast - Where to eat in Leith

Edinburgh is my favourite Scottish city by a mile. I love the Old and New Towns, and on our last visit enjoyed exploring Stockbridge and Dean Village. But when you fancy escaping the hustle and bustle of the city centre, Leith is where you want to be.

Situated north of the city, the port of Leith has seen some serious regeneration in recent years. You may know it from Trainspotting, but it's now an up and coming urban area packed with cool bars and eateries, including two Michelin starred restaurants!

We took advantage of free parking at Ocean Terminal, and strolled along the docks at Ocean Drive leading us to the Shore. A beautiful walk in the sunshine. Passing many pubs on the way, we inspected a lot of menus before deciding where to eat.

Of course we had to stop and cool down with an ice cold drink at Finn and Bear first. Their Mezcal margarita packed a fair boozy punch! Finn and Bear's menu is jam packed with burgers, dogs and nacho bowls but it was the wine cafe across the road that caught my attention...

Steak ciabatta with potatoes at Toast, Leith

Inspired by Middle Eastern flavours, Toast's evening menu boasts a selection of smaller plates or sharing dishes. However, it was larger individual plates for us. Gordon opted for a steak ciabatta with a side of delicious potatoes, while I devoured the lamb shakshuka - mopped up with warm pitta bread and topped with Greek yoghurt, it was an absolute treat! My taste buds have never been so happy.

Washed down with a Leith Gin and tonic to toast our upcoming trip to Berlin, this really was the perfect sunny afternoon in Leith. Toast also serve an array of breakfast and brunch dishes earlier in the day, so I definitely recommend checking them out if you're ever in the area.
